Cyclic Prefixed Block Transmission for Wireless Communications: Performance Analysis and Optimization (2009)
Block Transmission Techniques for Wireless Communications
In order to meet the market demand for high datarates, most digital wireless communication systems rely on broadband channels and therefore suffer from Inter Symbol Interference (ISI), a phenomenon that needs to be combatted at the receiver by appropriate equalization techniques in order to restore the transmitted information. In this context, block transmission techniques based on the use of a Cyclic-Prefix (CP) have attracted a lot of attention in the last years for they allow an efficient and computationally cheap ISI cancellation procedure. Historically, OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) was the first proposed block transmission scheme and has been adopted in numerous standards for high-speed data transmission in both wired and wireless applications. In the wireless context however, OFDM suffers of several problems, both on an implementational point of view and from a performance perspective. Some recently proposed block transmission ...

Advanced Signal Processing Concepts for Multi-Dimensional Communication Systems
The widespread use of mobile internet and smart applications has led to an explosive growth in mobile data traffic. With the rise of smart homes, smart buildings, and smart cities, this demand is ever growing since future communication systems will require the integration of multiple networks serving diverse sectors, domains and applications, such as multimedia, virtual or augmented reality, machine-to-machine (M2M) communication / the Internet of things (IoT), automotive applications, and many more. Therefore, in the future, the communication systems will not only be required to provide Gbps wireless connectivity but also fulfill other requirements such as low latency and massive machine type connectivity while ensuring the quality of service. Without significant technological advances to increase the system capacity, the existing telecommunications infrastructure will be unable to support these multi-dimensional requirements. This poses an important demand for suitable waveforms with ...

Design and applications of Filterbank structures implementing Reed-Solomon codes
In nowadays communication systems, error correction provides robust data transmission through imperfect (noisy) channels. Error correcting codes are a crucial component in most storage and communication systems – wired or wireless –, e.g. GSM, UMTS, xDSL, CD/DVD. At least as important as the data integrity issue is the recent realization that error correcting codes fundamentally change the trade-offs in system design. High-integrity, low redundancy coding can be applied to increase data rate, or battery life time or by reducing hardware costs, making it possible to enter mass market. When it comes to the design of error correcting codes and their properties, there are two main theories that play an important role in this work. Classical coding theory aims at finding the best code given an available block length. This thesis focuses on the ubiquitous Reed-Solomon codes, one of the major ...

Study and optimization of multi-antenna systems associated with multicarrier modulations
Since several years, multi-antenna systems are foreseen as a potential solution for increasing the throughput of future wireless communication systems. The aim of this thesis is to study and to improve the transmitter and receiver's techniques of these MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) systems in the context of a multi-carrier transmission. On the one hand, the OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex) modulation, which transform a frequency selective channel into multiple non frequency selective channels, is particularly well adapted to the conception of MIMO receivers with low complexity. On the other hand, two techniques allowing to improve the exploitation of frequential and/or temporal diversities are associated with OFDM, namely linear precoding (LP-OFDM) and CDMA in a MC-CDMA (Multicarrier Code division Multiplex Access) scheme. We have associated LP-OFDM and MC-CDMA with two MIMO techniques which require no channel state information at the ...

Communication Rates for Fading Channels with Imperfect Channel-State Information
An important specificity of wireless communication channels are the rapid fluctuations of propagation coefficients. This effect is called fading and is caused by the motion of obstacles, scatterers and reflectors standing along the different paths of electromagnetic wave propagation between the transmitting and the receiving terminal. These changes in the geometry of the wireless channel prompt the attenuation coefficients and the relative phase shifts between the multiple propagation paths to vary. This suggests to model the channel coefficients (the transfer matrix) as random variables. The present thesis studies information rates for reliable transmission of information over fading channels under the realistic assumption that the receiver has only imperfect knowledge of the random fading state. While the over-idealized assumption of perfect channel-state information at the receiver (CSIR) gives rise to many simple expressions and is fairly well understood, the settings with ...

Digital design and experimental validation of high-performance real-time OFDM systems
The goal of this Ph.D. dissertation is to address a number of challenges encountered in the digital baseband design of modern and future wireless communication systems. The fast and continuous evolution of wireless communications has been driven by the ambitious goal of providing ubiquitous services that could guarantee high throughput, reliability of the communication link and satisfy the increasing demand for efficient re-utilization of the heavily populated wireless spectrum. To cope with these ever-growing performance requirements, researchers around the world have introduced sophisticated broadband physical (PHY)-layer communication schemes able to accommodate higher bandwidth, which indicatively include multiple antennas at the transmitter and receiver and are capable of delivering improved spectral efficiency by applying interference management policies. The merging of Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) schemes with the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) offers a flexible signal processing substrate to implement ...

Transmission over Time- and Frequency-Selective Mobile Wireless Channels
The wireless communication industry has experienced rapid growth in recent years, and digital cellular systems are currently designed to provide high data rates at high terminal speeds. High data rates give rise to intersymbol interference (ISI) due to so-called multipath fading. Such an ISI channel is called frequency selective. On the other hand, due to terminal mobility and/or receiver frequency offset the received signal is subject to frequency shifts (Doppler shifts). Doppler shift induces time-selectivity characteristics. The Doppler effect in conjunction with ISI gives rise to a so-called doubly selective channel (frequency- and time-selective). In addition to the channel effects, the analog front-end may suffer from an imbalance between the I and Q branch amplitudes and phases as well as from carrier frequency offset. These analog front-end imperfections then result in an additional and significant degradation in system performance, especially ...

Time Domain Channel Shortening for Multicarrier Systems
Multi-Carrier (MC) modulation has various advantages that make it useful for a wide variety of digital communication systems. Actually, it has been chosen as the physical layer standard for a diversity of basic systems such as digital transmission over telephone lines, applications in broadcasting and in wireless networks. The most important advantage of the MC system is its robustness against interferences. In fact, the cyclic prefix (CP) insertion through MC symbols provides higher immunity against delay spread and interferences. Therefore, as long as channel dispersion is not longer than the CP, system performance does not degrade and the need of time-domain equalization is not usually immediate. However, highly time dispersive channel leads to a significant reduction of the transmission data rate since the received signal is corrupted by both inter-carrier and inter symbol interferences. To avoid such a performance degradation, ...

MIMO Designs for filter bank multicarrier and multiantenna systems based on OQAM
From the perspective of increasingly data rate requirements in mobile communications, it is deemed necessary to do further research so that the future goals can be reached. To that end, the radio-based communications are resorting to multicarrier modulations and spatial diversity. Until today, the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation is regarded as the dominant technology. On one hand, the OFDM modulation is able to accommodate multiantenna configurations in a very straightforward manner. On the other hand, the poor stopband attenuation exhibited by the OFDM modulation, highlights that a definitely tight synchronization is required. In addition, the cyclic prefix (CP) has to be sufficiently long to avoid inter-block interference, which may substantially reduce the spectral efficiency. In order to overcome the OFDM drawbacks, the filter bank multicarrier modulation based on OQAM (FBMC/OQAM) is introduced. This modulation does not need any ...

Pilot Pattern Optimization for Doubly-Selective MIMO OFDM Transmissions
Current wireless transmission systems are far from their theoretically achievable performance bounds. The main reason behind this is a conservative approach of the standardization organizations. Most current standards for wireless communication employ Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) modulation as it offers a high spectral effciency. These systems require the insertion of at the receiver known symbols in order to estimate the transmission channel. These so-called pilot-symbols consume available resources such as power and bandwidth, and therefore eff ectively decrease spectral effciency. This thesis deals with pilot pattern optimization for MIMO OFDM transmission systems. First, an optimal power distribution among pilot- and data-symbols is considered. The post-equalization Signal to Interference and Noise Ratio (SINR) is maximized in order to deliver optimal performance. The optimal power o set between the pilot- and data-symbols depends on the ratio between the number ...

In order to meet the diverse requirements imposed by a massive number of applications, the fifth generation (5G) New Radio (NR) Physical Layer (PHY) is designed to provide a highly flexible framework. This flexibility is made possible through a scalable numerology. The term numerology refers to the PHY waveform parametrization and allows the use of different subcarrier spacings, symbol and slot durations. In addition to an efficient support of various service requirements, employing a scalable numerology allows a better adjustment of the PHY waveform to different channel conditions, providing more robustness against channel variations. Despite increased flexibility provided by multiplexing different numerologies, there is also a drawback of this concept, i.e., Internumerology Interference (INI) caused by non-orthogonal subcarriers between different numerologies. In this thesis, a closed-form expression of INI is derived for both, Cyclic Prefix (CP)-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) ...

Robust Game-Theoretic Algorithms for Distributed Resource Allocation in Wireless Communications
The predominant game-theoretic solutions for distributed rate-maximization algorithms in Gaussian interference channels through optimal power control require perfect channel knowledge, which is not possible in practice due to various reasons, such as estimation errors, feedback quantization and latency between channel estimation and signal transmission. This thesis therefore aims at addressing this issue through the design and analysis of robust game-theoretic algorithms for rate-maximization in Gaussian interference channels in the presence of bounded channel uncertainty. A robust rate-maximization game is formulated for the single-antenna frequency-selective Gaussian interference channel under bounded channel uncertainty. The robust-optimization equilibrium solution for this game is independent of the probability distribution of the channel uncertainty. The existence and uniqueness of the equilibrium are studied and sufficient conditions for the uniqueness of the equilibrium are provided. Distributed algorithms to compute the equilibrium solution are presented and shown to ...

Analog Joint Source Channel Coding for Wireless Communications
In 1948, the Shannon’s work titled ”A mathematical theory of communication” completely revolutionized the way to understand the problem of the reliable communications. He showed that any communications system is able to transmit with an arbitrarily low error probability as long as the transmission rate is kept below a certain limit. The separation between the source and channel coding was also shown as the optimal strategy to achieve the theoretical limits. Those ideas inspire the development of a whole digital communication theory focused on building more and more sophisticated coding schemes. It leads to most of communication systems were designed according to a digital approach and the separation principle from that moment, whereas other alternatives were set aside. However, in the last years, communication systems based on a jointly optimization of the source and channel encoder has aroused the interest ...

ACHIEVABLE RATES FOR GAUSSIAN CHANNELS WITH MULTIPLE RELAYS
Multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) channels are extensively proposed as a means to overcome the random channel impairments of wireless communications. Based upon placing multiple antennas at both the transmitter and receiver sides of the communication, their virtues are twofold. On the one hand, they allow the transmitter to code across antennas to overcome unknown channel fading. On the other hand, they permit the receiver to sample the signal on the space domain. This operation, followed by the coherent combination of samples, increases the signal-to-noise ratio at the input of the detector and provides large capacity, and reliability, gains. Nevertheless, equipping wireless handsets with multiple antennas is not always possible or worthwhile. Mainly, due to size and cost constraints, respectively. For these cases, the appropriate manner to exploit multi-antenna processing is by means of relaying. This consists of a set of wireless relay ...

Digital compensation of front-end non-idealities in broadband communication systems
The wireless communication industry has seen a tremendous growth in the last few decades. The ever increasing demand to stay connected at home, work, and on the move, with voice and data applications, has continued the need for more sophisticated end-user devices. A typical smart communication device these days consists of a radio system that can access a mixture of mobile cellular services (GSM, UMTS, etc), indoor wireless broadband services (WLAN-802.11b/g/n), short range and low energy personal communications (Bluetooth), positioning and navigation systems (GPS), etc. A smart device capable of meeting all these requirements has to be highly flexible and should be able to reconfigure radio transmitters and receivers as and when required. Further, the radio modules used in these devices should be extremely small so that the device itself is portable. In addition, the device should also be economical ...
