The key defining feature of a software defined radio is the flexibility to reconfigure itself to different modes, frequency bands, or wireless standards. This is achieved by, for example, running software modules on a general purpose digital signal processor. The complexity of a common hardware platform shared by Bluetooth and a relatively costly wireless standard like Wi-Fi, must have the capacity to handle the more demanding system. In such scenarios, there will be extra resources available when Bluetooth is running and Wi-Fi is in an idle state.
