Wireless Network Localization via Cooperation
This dissertation details two classes of cooperative localization methods for wireless networks in mixed line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight (LOS/NLOS) environments. The classes of methods depend on the amount of prior knowledge available. The methods used for both classes are based on the assumptions in practical localization environments that neither NLOS identification nor experimental campaigns are affordable. Two major contributions are, first, in methods that provide satisfactory localization accuracy whilst relaxing the requirement on statistical knowledge about the measurement model. Second, in methods that provide significantly improved localization performance without the requirement of good initialization. Due to significant advances made over the last few decades in the areas of (wireless) networking, communications and microprocessor fabrication, the use of sensor networks to observe physical phenomena is rapidly becoming commonplace. Over this period, many aspects of sensor networks have been explored, yet a thorough understanding of how to analyse and process the vast amounts of sensor data collected remains an open area of research. Traffic Characterisation and Modelling for Call Admission Control Schemes on ATM Networks
Allocating resources to variable bitrate (VBR) teletraffic sources is not a trivial task because the impact of such sources on a buffered switch is diffcult to predict. This problem has repercussions for call admission control (CAC) on asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks. In this thesis we report on investigations into the nature of several types of VBR teletraffic. The purpose of these investigations is to identify parameters of the traffic that may assist in the development of CAC algorithms. As such we concentrate on the correlation structure and marginal distribution: the two aspects of a teletraffic source that affect its behaviour through a buffered switch. The localization and tracking of sound sources using microphone arrays is a problem that, even if it has attracted attention from the signal processing research community for decades, remains open.
