Precoding and Equalisation for Broadband MIMO Systems

Joint precoding and equalisation can help to effectively exploit the advantages of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) wireless communications systems. For broadband MIMO channels with channel state information (CSI) such techniques to date rely on block transmission where guard intervals are applied to mitigate inter-block (IBI) and inter-symbol interference (ISI) but reduce spectral efficiency. Therefore, this thesis investigates novel MIMO transceiver designs to improve the transmission rate and error performance. Firstly, a broadband MIMO precoding and equalisation design is proposed which combines a recently proposed broadband singular value decomposition (BSVD) algorithm for MIMO decoupling with conventional block transmission techniques to address the remaining broadband SISO subchannels. It is demonstrated that the BSVD helps not only to remove co-channel interference within a MIMO channel, but also reduces ISI at a very small loss in channel energy, leading to an improved error performance and ...

Multi-user Receiver Structures for Direct Sequence Code Division Multiple Access

This thesis reports on an investigation of various system architectures and receiver structures for cellular communications systems which discriminate users by direct sequence code division multiple access (DSCDMA). Attention is focussed on the downlink of such a spread spectrum system and the influence of a number of design parameters is considered. The objective of the thesis is to investigate signal processing techniques which may be employed either at the receiver, or throughout the system to improve the overall capacity. The principles of spread spectrum communication are first outlined, including a discussion of the relative merits of spreading sequence sets, and a description of various signal processing techniques which are to be applied to the multi-user environment. The measure of system performance is introduced, and the conventional DS-CDMA system is analysed theoretically and through simulation to provide a reference performance level. ...

Blind Equalisation for Space-Time Coding over ISI Channels

Multi-input multi-output (MIMO) channels are known to increase the capacity of a transmission link. This can be exploited to increase either the multiplexing gain or the diversity gain, which leads to a higher data throughput or a better resilience of the link to fading, respectively. This thesis is concerned with the diversity gain, which, in a flat fading channel, can be maximised by Alamouti’s space-time block coding (STBC) scheme and a number of derivative techniques. For frequency selective fading, i.e. dispersive, MIMO channels, a few solutions have been reported in the literature including MIMO-OFDM, where the channel is decomposed into a number of narrowband problems, and a technique known as time-reversal STBC. For the latter, a number of blind adaptive algorithms have been derived, implemented and tested in order to avoid the requirement of explicit knowledge of the channel. The ...

Iterative Multi-User Receivers for CDMA Systems

Mobile communication networks of the third and future generations are designed to offer high-data rate services like video-telephony and data-transfer. The current Rake receiver architecture will create a shortage in available bandwidth offered to the users. This is not due to a shortage in spectrum but results from inefficient receiver architectures. Spectral efficiency can be increased considerably through multi-user detection techniques in the receiver algorithms. The present thesis investigates iterative re- ceivers for encoded CDMA transmission in the uplink. The iterative receiver is a suboptimal receiver algorithm with manageable complexity. It consists of an inter- ference mitigating multi-user detector, a bank of single-user decoders, and a channel estimator. Instead of deciding on the transmitted symbols right after the first decod- ing, the receiver feeds back tentative decision symbols to mitigate multiple-access interference in the next iteration. Similarly, soft decision symbols ...

Fast Blind Adaptive Equalisation for Multiuser CDMA Systems

In order to improve communication over a dispersive channel in a CDMA system, we have to re-establish the orthogonally of codes which are used when combining input signals from many users onto a single communication path, as otherwise the performance of such system is limited significantly by inter-symbol interference (ISI) and multiuser access interference (MAI). In order to achieve this, adaptive filters are employed. A variety of adaptive schemes to remove ISI and MAI have been reported in the literature, some of which rely on training sequences, such as the Least Mean Squares (LMS) and Recursive Least Squares (RLS) algorithms, or on blind adaptation, such as the Constant Modulus Algorithm (CMA) or the Decision Directed algorithm (DD), which has similar convergence properties as the LMS in the absence of decision errors, the CMA is relatively slow compared to the DD ...

On Adaptive MMSE Receiver Strategies for TD-CDMA

In this thesis a modified implementation of the adaptive minimum mean squared error (MMSE) receiver for a time division code division multiple access (TD-CDMA) system for third generation mobile communications is presented. This implementation can operate with spreading sequences which span over a few symbols and in environments where more than one spreading code is allocated to a single user. Two structures which combine the presented MMSE structure and the Rake receiver are also presented in an attempt to combine the advantages of both structures. After analysing the effect on a direct sequence spread spectrum system of multiple access interference and multipath fading induced inter-chip interference, the existing techniques for multiple access interference suppression capabilities are reviewed. Special attention is paid to the adaptive MMSE receiver, which takes into account the effect of multipath fading without requiring any additional channel ...

Adaptive Equalisation for Impulsive Noise Environments

This thesis addresses the problem of adaptive channel equalisation in environments where the interfering noise exhibits non–Gaussian behaviour due to impulsive phenomena. The family of alpha–stable distributions has proved to be a suitable and flexible tool for the modelling of signals with impulsive nature. However, non–Gaussian alpha–stable signals have infinite variance, and signal processing techniques based on second order moments are meaningless in such environments. In order to exploit the flexibility of the stable family and still take advantage of the existing signal processing tools, a novel framework for the integration of the stable model in a communications context is proposed, based on a finite dynamic range receiver. The performance of traditional signal processing algorithms designed under the Gaussian assumption may degrade seriously in impulsive environments. When this degradation cannot be tolerated, the traditional signal processing methods must be revisited ...

Channel estimation and non-linear transceiver designs for MIMO OFDM relay systems

Multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) systems deploy multiple antennas at either end of a communication link and can provide significant benefits compared to traditional single antenna systems, such as increased data rates through spatial multiplexing gain, and/or improved link reliability through diversity techniques. Recently, the natural extension of utilising multiple antennas in relay networks, known as MIMO relaying, has attracted significant research attention due to the fact that the benefits of MIMO can be coupled with extended network coverage through the use of relaying devices. This thesis concentrates on the design and analysis of different aspects of MIMO relay systems communicating over frequency selective channels with the use of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). The first focus of this thesis is on the development of training based channel estimation algorithms for two-hop MIMO OFDM relaying. In the first phase of channel ...

Nonlinear receivers for DS-CDMA

The growing demand for capacity in wireless communications is the driving force behind improving established networks and the deployment of a new worldwide mobile standard. Capacity calculations show that the direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) technique has more capacity than the time division multiple access technique. Therefore, most 3rd generation mobile systems will incorporate some sort of DS-CDMA. In this thesis DS-CDMA receiver structures are investigated from the view point of pattern recognition which leads to new DS-CDMA receiver structures. It is known that the optimum DS-CDMA receiver has a nonlinear structure with prohibitive complexity for practical implementation. It is also known that the currently implemented receiver in 2nd generation DSCDMA mobile handsets has poor performance, because it suffers from multiuser interference. Consequently, this work focuses on sub-optimum nonlinear receivers for DS-CDMA in the downlink scenario. First, the ...

Space-time Processing and Equalization for Wireless Communications

In this thesis several aspects of space-time processing and equalization for wireless communications are treated. We discuss several different methods of improving estimates of space-time channels, such as temporal parametrization, spatial parametrization, reduced rank channel estimation, bootstrap channel estimation, and joint estimation of an FIR channel and an AR noise model. In wireless communication the signal is often subject to intersymbol interference as well as interference from other users. We here discuss space-time decision feedback equalizers and space-time maximum likelihood sequence estimators, which can alleviate the impact of these factors. In case the wireless channel does not experience a large amount of coupled delay and angle spread, sufficient performance may be obtained by an equalizer with a less complex structure. We therefore discuss various reduced complexity equalizers and symbol sequence estimators. We also discuss re-estimating the channel and/or re-tuning the ...

Efficient Communication over Wireless Channels: New Results in Equalization, Diversity and Interference Alignment

When data is transmitted over the wireless communication channel, the transmit signal experiences distortion depending on the channel¢s fading characteristics. On the one hand, this calls for efficient processing at the receiver to mitigate the detrimental effects of the channel and maximize data throughput. On the other hand, the diversity inherently present in these channels can be leveraged with appropriate transmit processing in order to increase the reliability of the transmission link. Recently, in [1] it was shown that the channel characteristics can be exploited to maximize the total data throughput in the interference channel where multiple user pairs rely on the same resource to communicate among themselves. In this PhD dissertation, we first propose novel equalizer designs for frequency selective channels. We then present new results on the diversity gain of equalizers in fading channels when appropriate precoding is ...

Low-Complexity Iterative Detection Algorithms for Multi-Antenna Systems

Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) techniques have been widely employed by dif- ferent wireless systems with many advantages. By using multiple antennas, the system is able to transmit multiple data streams simultaneously and within the same frequency band. The methods known as spatial multiplexing (SM) and spatial diversity (SD) im- proves the high spectral efficiency and link reliability of wireless communication systems without requiring additional transmitting power. By introducing channel coding in the transmission procedure, the information redundancy is introduced to further improve the reliability of SM links and the quality of service for the next generation communication systems. However, the throughput performance of these systems is limited by interference. A number of different interference suppression techniques have been reported in the literature. Theses techniques can be generally categorised into two aspects: the preprocessing techniques at the transmitter side and ...

UWB Channel Fading Statistics and Transmitted-Reference Communication

It is well known that Ultra WideBand (UWB) transmission is inherently robust against small-scale-fading (SSF) that arises in multipath scattering environments, due to its large signal bandwidth. However, no model with a physical interpretation exists that relates the variations of received signal strength to the signal bandwidth and general channel parameters, like e.g. the average channel power delay profile. Such a model would be of relevance for e.g. system designers, who have to make tradeoffs between system aspects, like complexity and energy efficiency on one hand, and robustness against small-scale fading on the other hand. In this thesis, a model is presented that allows for such a tradeoff analysis, relating the average power delay profile parameters and signal bandwidth to the statistical properties of the SSF. Additionally, it is shown how the uncoded and coded BER of BPSK modulation can ...

Adaptive Equalisation for Downlink UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access

The third generation mobile system Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) Terrestrial Radio Access (UTRA) has been mainly specified to provide various multimedia capabilities and good service quality. However, since UMTS is based on direct sequence CDMA (DS-CDMA) techniques the performance and the capacity of such systems is significantly limited by multiuser access interference (MAI) and inter-symbol interference (ISI). Therefore, robust and reliable detectors are required to mitigate these effects. Specifically, the multi-user detector exhibits a significant improvement in capacity and spectrum efficiency compared with the conventional matched filter receiver and single-user detector. Nevertheless, its complexity and prior knowledge requirement render it unsuitable for application in the downlink due to handset constraints. In this thesis, we propose a new robust and simple blind multiuser equaliser for downlink DS-CDMA systems, the so-called filtered-R multiple error CM algorithm (FIRMER-CMA) equaliser. The latter has ...

Algorithms and Techniques for Polynomial Matrix Decompositions

The concept of polynomial matrices is introduced and the potential application of polynomial matrix decompositions is discussed within the general context of multi-channel digital signal processing. A recently developed technique, known as the second order sequential rotation algorithm (SBR2), for performing the eigenvalue decomposition of a para-Hermitian polynomial matrix (PEVD) is presented. The potential benefit of using the SBR2 algorithm to impose strong decorrelation on the signals received by a broadband sensor array is demonstrated by means of a suitable numerical simulation. This demonstrates how the polynomial matrices produced as a result of the PEVD can be of unnecessarily high order. This is undesirable for many practical applications and slows down the iterative computational procedure. An effective truncation technique for controlling the growth in order of these polynomial matrices is proposed. Depending on the choice of truncation parameters, it provides ...
