Study on Subband Adaptive Array for Space-Time Codes in Wideband Channel

Recently, many works have been accomplished on transmit diversity for a high-speed data transmission through the wireless channel. A Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) system which employs multiple antennas at transmitter and receiver has been shown to be able to improve transmission data rate and capacity of the system. When the channel state information (CSI) is unknown at the transmitter, an multiple input single output (MISO) system combined with the transmit diversity of space time coding modulation known as space-time block coding (STBC) has taken a great attention. However, the performance of STBC is deteriorated under frequency selective fading due to inter symbol interference (ISI). An STBC employing tapped delay line adaptive array (STBC-TDLAA) is known as a solution for this problem since it utilizes the delayed signals to enhance the desired signal instead of excluding them as interferences. However, ...

Space-Time Block Coding for Multiple Antenna Systems

The demand for mobile communication systems with high data rates has dramatically increased in recent years. New methods are necessary in order to satisfy this huge communications demand, exploiting the limited resources such as bandwidth and power as efficient as possible. MIMO systems with multiple an- tenna elements at both link ends are an efficient solution for future wireless communications systems as they provide high data rates by exploiting the spatial domain under the constraints of limited bandwidth and transmit power. Space-Time Block Coding (STBC) is a MIMO transmit strategy which exploits transmit diversity and high reliability. STBCs can be divided into two main classes, namely, Orthogonal Space-Time Block Codes (OSTBCs) and Non-Orthogonal Space-Time Block Codes (NOSTBCs). The Quasi-Orthogonal Space-Time Block Codes (QSTBCs) belong to class of NOSTBCs and have been an intensive area of research. The OSTBCs achieve full ...

Unified approach for optimisation of single-user and multi-user multiple-input multiple-output wireless systems

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems will be applied in wireless communications in order to increase the performance, spectral efficiency, and reliability. Theoretically, the channel capacity of those systems grows linearly with the number of transmit and receive antennas. An important performance metric beneath capacity is the normalised mean square error (MSE) under the assumption of optimal linear reception. Clearly, both performance measures depend on the properties of the MIMO channel as well as on the considered system approach, e.g. on the type of channel state information which is available at the transmitter. It has been shown that even partial CSI at the transmitter can increase the performance. In this thesis, we analyse the performance and design optimal transmit strategies of singleand multiuser MIMO systems with respect to the statistical properties of the fading channel and under different types of CSI at ...

Randomized Space-Time Block Coding for the Multiple-Relay Channel

In the last decade, cooperation among multiple terminals has been seen as one of the more promising strategies to improve transmission speed in wireless communications networks. Basically, the idea is to mimic an antenna array and apply distributed versions of well-known space-diversity techniques. In this context, the simplest cooperative scheme is the relay channel: all the terminals (relays) that overhear a point-to-point communication between a source and a destination may decide to aid the source by forwarding (relaying) its message. In a mobile system, it is common to assume that the relays do not have any information about the channel between them and the destination. Under this hypothesis, the best solution to exploit the diversity offered by multiple transmitting antennas is to use space-time coding (STC). However, classical STC's are designed for systems with a fixed and usually low number ...

Communication Rates for Fading Channels with Imperfect Channel-State Information

An important specificity of wireless communication channels are the rapid fluctuations of propagation coefficients. This effect is called fading and is caused by the motion of obstacles, scatterers and reflectors standing along the different paths of electromagnetic wave propagation between the transmitting and the receiving terminal. These changes in the geometry of the wireless channel prompt the attenuation coefficients and the relative phase shifts between the multiple propagation paths to vary. This suggests to model the channel coefficients (the transfer matrix) as random variables. The present thesis studies information rates for reliable transmission of information over fading channels under the realistic assumption that the receiver has only imperfect knowledge of the random fading state. While the over-idealized assumption of perfect channel-state information at the receiver (CSIR) gives rise to many simple expressions and is fairly well understood, the settings with ...

Efficient Communication over Wireless Channels: New Results in Equalization, Diversity and Interference Alignment

When data is transmitted over the wireless communication channel, the transmit signal experiences distortion depending on the channel¢s fading characteristics. On the one hand, this calls for efficient processing at the receiver to mitigate the detrimental effects of the channel and maximize data throughput. On the other hand, the diversity inherently present in these channels can be leveraged with appropriate transmit processing in order to increase the reliability of the transmission link. Recently, in [1] it was shown that the channel characteristics can be exploited to maximize the total data throughput in the interference channel where multiple user pairs rely on the same resource to communicate among themselves. In this PhD dissertation, we first propose novel equalizer designs for frequency selective channels. We then present new results on the diversity gain of equalizers in fading channels when appropriate precoding is ...

Distributed Space-Time Coding Techniques with Limited Feedback in Cooperative MIMO Networks

Multi-input multi-output (MIMO) wireless networks and distributed MIMO relaying wireless networks have attracted significant attention in current generation of wireless communication networks, and will play a key role in the next generation of wireless net- works. The improvement of network capacity, data rate and reliability can be achieved at the cost of increasing computational complexity of employing space-time coding (STC) and distributed STC (DSTC) in MIMO and distributed MIMO relaying networks, respectively. Efficient designs and algorithms to achieve high diversity and coding gains with low computational complexity in encoding and decoding of STC and DSTC schemes are essential. In this thesis, DSTC designs with high diversity and coding gains and efficient detection and code matrices optimization algorithms in cooperative MIMO networks are proposed. Firstly, adaptive power allocation (PA) algorithms with different criteria for a coop- erative MIMO network equipped with ...

Separability of Closely Spaced Users in Massive MIMO Systems

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) evolved to a key enabling physical layer (PHY) technology for the fifth generation (5G) of mobile communication systems and beyond. While the envisioned use cases of such communications systems are diverse, so are the challenges to meet their respective requirements. As a large-scale evolution of already well-established MIMO communications technologies, massive MIMO promises benefits with respect to all possible use cases. Theoretical works on massive MIMO, however, typically assumes i.i.d. Rayleigh fading channels without spatial channel correlation. The application of this model is justified through the assumption of rich scattering environments, which is claimed to hold, for example, in indoor environments. Spatial correlation of wireless channels leads to inter-stream interference in single-user MIMO communications systems and to inter-user interference in multi-user MIMO systems with linear precoding. Channel correlation is therefore crucial for the performance of such ...

Antenna arrays in wireless communications

We investigate two aspects of multiple-antenna wireless communication systems in this thesis: 1) deployment of an adaptive beamformer array at the receiver; and 2) space-time coding for arrays at the transmitter and the receiver. In the first part of the thesis, we establish sufficient conditions for the convergence of a popular least mean squares (LMS) algorithm known as the sequential Partial Update LMS Algorithm for adaptive beamforming. Partial update LMS (PU-LMS) algorithms are reduced complexity versions of the full update LMS that update a subset of filter coefficients at each iteration. We introduce a new improved algorithm, called Stochastic PU-LMS, which selects the subsets at random at each iteration. We show that the new algorithm converges for a wider class of signals than the existing PU-LMS algorithms. The second part of this thesis deals with the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Shannon ...

Mobile Cellular Communications with Base Station Antenna Arrays: Spectrum Efficiency, Algorithms and Propagation Models

This thesis deals with the problem of increasing the spectrum efficiency of cellular systems, by the use of antenna array base stations. The focus of the thesis is on downlink transmission in frequency division duplex systems, i.e., systems with different up and downlink carrier frequency. In a short summary the thesis: * Proposes five reasonable propagation models. * Uses these models to design and analyze three different beamformers: The maximum desired power (MDP), the summed interference to carrier ratio minimizing (SCIR) and the generalized-SCIR beamformer. * Introduces three capacity enhancement approaches: same sector frequency reuse (SSFR), reduced cluster size without nulling (RCS-WON) and reduced cluster size with nulling (RCS-WIN). * Proposes channel allocation, power control, and beamforming algorithms for these approaches. * Estimates the ``outage probability'' (probability of insufficient quality), for SICR-SSFR, SICR-RCS-WON and SICR-RCS-WIN, using simulations as well as ...

Subcarrier Intensity Modulated Free-Space Optical Communication Systems

This thesis investigates and analyses the performance of terrestrial free-space optical communication (FSO) system based on the phase shift keying pre-modulated subcarrier intensity modulation (SIM). The results are theoretically and experimentally compared with the classical On-Off keying (OOK) modulated FSO system in the presence of atmospheric turbulence. The performance analysis is based on the bit error rate (BER) and outage probability metrics. Optical signal traversing the atmospheric channel suffers attenuation due to scattering and absorption of the signal by aerosols, fog, atmospheric gases and precipitation. In the event of thick fog, the atmospheric attenuation coefficient exceeds 100 dB/km, this potentially limits the achievable FSO link length to less than 1 kilometre. But even in clear atmospheric conditions when signal absorption and scattering are less severe with a combined attenuation coefficient of less than 1 dB/km, the atmospheric turbulence significantly impairs ...

A Unified Framework for Communications through MIMO Channels

MULTIPLE-INPUT MULTIPLE-OUTPUT (MIMO) CHANNELS constitute a unified way of modeling a wide range of different physical communication channels, which can then be handled with a compact and elegant vector-matrix notation. The two paradigmatic examples are wireless multi-antenna channels and wireline Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) channels. Research in antenna arrays (also known as smart antennas) dates back to the 1960s. However, the use of multiples antennas at both the transmitter and the receiver, which can be naturally modeled as a MIMO channel, has been recently shown to offer a significant potential increase in capacity. DSL has gained popularity as a broadband access technology capable of reliably delivering high data rates over telephone subscriber lines. A DSL system can be modeled as a communication through a MIMO channel by considering all the copper twisted pairs within a binder as a whole rather ...

Non-Coherent Communication in Multiple-Antenna Systems: Receiver Design, Codebook Construction and Capacity Analysis

The thesis addresses the problem of space-time codebook design for communication in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems. The realistic and challenging non-coherent setup (channel state information is absent at the receiver) is considered. A generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT)-like detector is assumed at the receiver and contrary to most existing approaches, an arbitrary correlation structure is allowed for the additive Gaussian observation noise. A theoretical analysis of the probability of error is derived, for both the high and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regimes. This leads to a codebook design criterion which shows that optimal codebooks correspond to optimal packings in a Cartesian product of projective spaces. The actual construction of the codebooks involves solving a high-dimensional, nonlinear, nonsmooth optimization problem which is tackled here in two phases: a convex semi-definite programming (SDP) relaxation furnishes an initial point which is then ...

Measurement-based Performance Evaluation of WiMAX and HSDPA

In this work, a realistic physical layer performance evaluation of High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) as well as IEEE 802.16-2004, commonly referred to as Worldwide Inter-operability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), is provided. The performance evaluation is carried out in two measurement campaigns that took place in an alpine and an urban environment. Both, WiMAX and HSDPA use adaptive modulation and coding to adapt the channel coding rate and the size of the symbol alphabet to the current channel conditions. Additionally, both systems allow for multiple transmit and multiple receive antennas to increase the spectral efficiency and the reliability of the transmission. While WiMAX utilizes multiple transmit antennas by simple Alamouti space-time coding, HSDPA implements a closed-loop system with channel adaptive spatial precoding. The necessary, quantized channel information is fed back from the user equipment to the base station. The ...

Multiple-Antenna Systems: From Generic to Hardware-Informed Precoding Designs

5G-and-beyond communication systems are expected to be in a heterogeneous form of multiple-antenna cellular base stations (BSs) overlaid with small cells. The fully-digital BS structures can incur significant power consumption and hardware complexity. Moreover, the wireless BSs for small cells usually have strict size constraints, which incur additional hardware effects such as mutual coupling (MC). Consequently, the transmission techniques designed for future wireless communication systems should respect the hardware structures at the BSs. For this reason, in this thesis we extend generic downlink precoding to more advanced hardware-informed transmission techniques for a variety of BS structures. This thesis firstly extends the vector perturbation (VP) precoding to multiple-modulation scenarios, where existing VP-based techniques are sub-optimal. Subsequently, this thesis focuses on the downlink transmission designs for hardware effects in the form of MC, limited number of radio frequency (RF) chains, and low-precision ...
